3D Printing – FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication)

About the project

About the Technology

A FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication, also known as FDM®) machine melts a plastic wire and extrudes it through a nozzle. The molten material is applied to a build platform where it cools and cures. The component is built up by applying the material layer by layer.

FFF needs a support structure that attaches the components to the build platform and supports overhangs. This is built by a second nozzle in another material, which can be easily removed, or with the same nozzle printing a light support structure that is easy to break away. Several parts can be produced simultaneously, as long as they are all attached to the build platform.

Usual Areas of Applications

They are used in industry for fixtures and other industrial manufacturing tools or detailed prototypes and models in small lot sizes on demand.

Materials used in Re-FREAM

FFF works with thermoplastic materials e.g. ABS or PLA. The parts are durable (stable over time) and have good mechanical properties in standard colors. Heat resistant material, eco-friendly as well as biocompatible material for up to 24 hours bone/skin contact is available. The standard materials are available in different hardness and transparency values.

To complete the material portfolio, Haratech has the possibility to compound special additives and/or fillers into materials (wood fibres, special pigments…)

Technology is used by these Re-FREAM Partners

  • Haratech (Linz, Austria)
  • Profactor (Steyr, Austria)
